\u201cThe Boat\u201d, close\u00a0to\u00a0Aviemore in the heart of the\u00a0Cairngorms National Park,\u00a0was\u00a0founded in 1898, with the\u00a0current 18 hole\u00a0 layout designed by the renowned James Braid in 1930.<\/p>\n

The course\u00a0could serve as the definition of what a “highland course”\u00a0should be – a good variation of challenging holes carved into\u00a0a surrounding landscape\u00a0of trees, heather and broom, against a backdrop of the Cairngorm mountains.<\/p>\n

The magnificent 6th “Avenue”<\/p><\/div>\n

On a good day, especially if\u00a0playing well, then this may be\u00a0as close to golfing paradise as it gets.\u00a0\u00a0 This has\u00a0been recognised through the many accolades\u00a0the course has won, including being “Scotland’s No 1 Hidden Gem”.<\/p>\n

8th approach – Boat of Garten<\/p><\/div>\n

The combination of (invariably) wind, changeable weather and some undulating fairways, makes “the Boat” feel and play longer than its 5876 yards from the white tees.\u00a0 Play to your handicap here versus the SSS 69 and many will rightly be referring you to the Handicap committee.<\/p>\n

Regardless of your play, this is a beautifully architected course.\u00a0 The unusual opening par 3 first\u00a0hole at nearly 190 yards\u00a0is normally played into the prevailing wind – with danger left and right – par or bogie is a good start. Then the 2nd and 4th played in the\u00a0same direction, mean that getting to the 5th tee with your score intact is key to your overall score.\u00a0 After a bit of respite at the 5th, normally with the wind, the 6th, called “Avenue” is a magnificent longer par 4,\u00a0played to a plateau green.<\/p>\n

There are then many further great holes on this course, with only the 9th and 10th being the\u00a0main easier birdie contenders.\u00a0 The 18th is a fantastic\u00a0hole, demanding a long drive if you are to have any chance of holding a shot\u00a0on the plateau green.<\/p>\n

The course was in lovely condition when I played, with the greens true and fast.<\/p>\n

Due to its celebrity this is a\u00a0popular course with visitors from both home and abroad, therefore ensure to make a booking.\u00a0 I played a twilight round (after 4pm) at only \u00a330 – brilliant value.<\/p>\n
